DIY⎪Dorm Room Bed Headboard

Hello friends! Happy Monday!

To start off this week, I wanted to reach out to all my fellow college bounders.
I am heading to college in a little over a month. MY OH MY. I still cannot believe it.

With college right around the corner and dorm room shopping at an ALL TIME HIGH.
I thought I would share with you all a quick & easy DIY that will REALLY spice up any dorm room.

One of the main things on my DIY Dorm Room Checklist was making a Headboard. My mom loved the idea and I have seen so many dorm rooms with headboards and they just look so homey and chic.
 I love it.

My mom and I tackled this headboard this past weekend and let me tell ya, it was so easy!
So without further adieu here is my DIY Dorm Room Headboard.

{STEP 1}

Measure the width and height of your dorm bed.
If you cannot get measurements of your dorm room, try looking on the Housing Website for your school, most colleges have all the measurements for the dorm rooms online or you can call.
**When measuring the height you should measure from the base of the mattress spring to the top of the bed. Not from the floor of the bed to the top of the bed.**
The height of your headboard can be whatever you would like it to be.
My measurements were 32 X 40 exactly.

BE SURE TO ADD ABOUT 2 INCHES TO THE WIDTH. By adding 2 inches to the width of the headboard you can insure that the headboard will not slip through the rails on your dorm bed.

{STEP 2}

Purchase plywood from your local Home Depot or Lowe's.
The employees cut wood free of charge.
The plywood we purchased from Home Depot cost $22.

{STEP 3}
Find a fabric. This was my favorite part of this project.
The fabric we purchased was a nice light beige color.
I choose a plain fabric because I did not want so many different textures and colors in my room, since my decorative pillows pretty much have that covered.
We purchased our fabric from Hobby Lobby.
They also cut fabric free of charge.
Our measurements were 50 X 50 just to be on the safe side.
The cost was $20.

{STEP 4}
Lay all your supplies out and get started.

Supplies Needed:

Plywood
Quilt Batting
Fabric
Scissors
Staple Gun & Staplers
 ** Recommend getting the longest staples because the fabric & batting get very thick**

{STEP 5}

Lay out all fabric that will be stapled onto the plywood.
First lay out the fabric, then three layers of batting then plywood.

{STEP 6}

Begin stapling the batting to the plywood.
On the first layer of batting we only stapled one row of staples per side.

To make it easier to get the staples through the batting on the corners, we cut some of the batting out on the first two layers of batting and kept the corner batting on for the third layer of batting.

Continue to fold and staple each layer of batting onto plywood.
Keep in mind the staples will get harder and harder to push in due to the thickness.

{STEP 7}

This is what your headboard should somewhat look like before you staple the fabric on.

 When stapling the fabric onto the plywood be sure to pull the fabric on one side to eliminate any type of wrinkles or bumps on your headboard.

Here is what the headboard looks like from the back and front views.

{STEP 8}

If you want you can add some decor to your headboard. We added some burlap ribbon on the headboard in a cross design.

And just like that you are finished!

I hope you all enjoyed this DIY! Thanks for checking out my blog and be sure to check back soon.
